Group A

Mario Gomez’s first half double put Bayern Munich two points clear at the top of this pool and maintained their 100% record in Europe so far this season. It was too much for Manchester City to come back from, but the headlines were stolen by Carlos Tevez and the furore over allegations that he refused to play in the fixture. His exit from Eastlands, protracted as it has been, looks certain to happen in January.

Strong line-ups were fielded by both sides, with Jerome Boateng in visiting colours up against the club he left in favour for a return to his homeland. Meanwhile Marek Hamsik’s goal and an Edinson Cavani penalty put Napoli second in the table with Villarreal unable to respond.

Group B

2010 winners Inter Milan put their shock home defeat to Trabzonspor on matchday 1 behind them with an away win in Russia. Since then the Nerazzurri sacked Gian Piero Gasperini and replaced him with ex-Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri. The fix seems to have worked as the Tinkerman steered Inter to their second victory in a week, triumphing in Europe over CSKA Moscow.
